Departments

The Faculty has four departments, namely the Department of Economics, Department of Development Studies, Department of Administrative Studies and Politics and the Department of Applied Statistics. It has a strong group of academic staff consisting of 7 Professors, 17 Associate Professors and 45 lecturers, 2 tutors backed by 25 supporting staff. Courses, curriculum and examination questions are continuously being assessed and moderated by external examiners from renowned foreign universities.

Programmes

Faculty of Economics offers both undergraduate and graduate training. Since 1976, all undergraduate courses are taught in Bahasa Malaysia while the graduate courses are conducted in English. The semester system was adopted in 1996. Typically, the First Semester ( I ) runs from early July to late November while the Second Semester ( II ) runs from early December to early May. The Special Semester ( equivalent to summer school elsewhere ) runs from early May to early July every year. There are about 14 weeks of instruction in each Semester I and II, and 8 weeks in the Special Semester.

Bachelor of Economics

The undergraduate program, which takes on average three years to complete, leads to the Bachelor of Economics (B.Ec.). In the first year of the undergraduate program, students take one course each from the five departments in the Faculty. Beyond the first year, students choose their field of speacialization-one of the five offered by each department in FEA. Under this arrangement, second and final year students take a set of core faculty and departmental courses supplemented by other courses of their choice from departments outside their specialization. This curriculum reflects FEA's emphasis the balance between specialized and inter-disciplinary training.

Master of Economics

Degree by Coursework

The programme is designed for those aspiring to hold senior positions requiring economic analyses in the private and public sectors. Since its inception, the programme has been restructured from time to time to keep pace with developments in economics and with changing national and international circumstances. Students are required to take Twenty Seven (27) credit hours of coursework and nine (9) credit hour research paper to complete the programme.

This programme is fully by research and a candidate is required to submit a dissertation with a prescribed length of not more than 60,000 words. The dissertation may be written in Bahasa Malaysia or English. Applicants may be required to take prescribed courses by the Faculty.

The minimum period of study is two (2) semesters with the maximum being ten (10) semesters.

Language Instruction

The medium of instruction is English.

Master of Public Administration

Degree by Coursework

The programme is offered by the Department of Administrative Studies and Politics, drawing on expertise in political science and public administration. The teaching synergies and interdisciplinary research allow the department and students to address the challenges of governance, public administration and international relations in national and regional contexts. The programme also focuses on the fundamental principles, practises and techniques of organisational management related to public instituitions.

It attempts to expose students to relevant theories, and their application in research in multidisciplinary fields such as political science, public administration, political economy, human resources management, internatinal relations and town management. The emphasis is on linking theory to research, experimental and professional analysis of a wide range of issues, problem-solving and professional activities in the areas of policy analysis, public sector management, urban planning design and urban development.

Students are required to take 27 credit hours of coursework and a 9 credit hour research to complete the programme.

Master of Applied Statistics

Degree by Coursework

The programme is designed to upgrade the analytical skills of managerial and technical personnel to further their career advancement and to enhance their competence in applications of statistics. The aim is to provide training in the science of collecting, organising, presenting, analysing and interpreting numerical data, and the ability to use the results for decision making and problem solving in a range of fields including banking, business, economics, health, population studies and social sciences.

This programme consists of 36 credit hours as follows:

  • four (4) core courses and eight (8) optional courses whereby each course carries three (3) credit hours; or
  • four (4) core courses and five (5) optional courses whereby each course carries three (3) credit hours and one course that leads to a Research Paper with a total of nine (9) credit hours.

Doctor of Philosophy

Structure of Programme

The programme is fully by research in any of the fields of study in economics, public administration, politics and applied statistics. Applicants may be required to take prescribed courses by the Faculty. Upon completion of the research (and course, if applicable), a candidate submits a thesis with a prescribed length of not more than 100,000 words which may be written in Bahasa Malaysia or English.

Candidates may be required to present theire findings at a Faculty seminar prior to final submission of their theses. If required by the examiners, candidates will present themselves for an oral examination.

This programme is fully by research and a candidate is required to submit a dissertation with a prescribed length of not more than 60,000 words. The dissertation may be written in Bahasa Malaysia or English. Applicants may be required to take prescribed courses by the Faculty.

Admission Requirements

  • A Master's degree with good grades and/or a good review of the master's thesis. A good Bachelor's (honours) degree.
  • Must submit evidence of adequate training and ability to undertake the proposed research.
  • Ph.D in Economics programme requires a strong major in economics at the undergraduate or master's level.
  • Ph.D in Applied Statistics programme requires a strong major in statistics at the undergraduate or master's level.
  • The Ph.D in Public Administration requires that applicants have a strong major in public administration and politics at the undergraduate or Master's level.

Programme Duration

The minimum period of study is four semesters and the maximum being 16 semesters.
Programmes by thesis is open throughout the year.

Language Instruction

The medium of instruction is English.
